My Story with Chess – Renato Luiz Hinnig Filho

Palhoça Chess Club
Renato Luiz Hinnig Filho, 8 years old.

My history with chess began very early. At just 3 years old, I had my first encounters with the chessboard. While many children were discovering common childhood toys, I was already fascinated by the pieces, the movements, and the challenges the game offered.

Throughout my school years, chess was always present. I attended institutions that shaped my development, such as the former Roda Pião (now Elite), the former Energia (now Fórmula), and also Sesc/Senac, where I had the opportunity to further develop my passion for the sport.

At the age of 8, I took an even more important step: I started training with Professor Peta, a leading figure in chess. It was during this period that my technical level improved significantly. I began participating in championships, representing schools, and experiencing competitions that taught me discipline, focus, strategy, and emotional control.

Chess wasn't just a game in my life—it was a tool for personal development. It taught me to think before I act, to take responsibility for my decisions, and to never give up when faced with a difficult situation.

Today, at 21 years old, I am interning at the São José City Hall, working in the SUSP (Unified Public Security System). Simultaneously, I am studying Civil Engineering at Uniasselvi, currently in my fourth semester. My academic training further strengthens my discipline, organization, and vision for the future.

This experience in public service and at the university broadened my perspective on the importance of social and preventative projects in the lives of children and adolescents.

It was then that I made a decision that changed the course of my life: to found the Palhoça Chess Club.

The club's objective is much greater than teaching chess moves. It was created with the mission of rescuing young people, teenagers, and children who are currently excessively on their cell phones, offering a healthy, educational, and social alternative.

Chess promotes the development of logical reasoning, improves concentration, discipline and responsibility, fosters healthy social interaction, respect for others, and emotional control.

I want to give future generations the same opportunity I had: to grow through sport, develop values, and build a better future.

The Palhoça Chess Club represents a personal dream, but also a social commitment.

This proves that sport transforms lives — and I am living proof of that. Today, more than just a player, I have become someone who wants to train new players and, above all, to develop citizens.
