14th edition of the Varilux French Film Festival at Paradigma Cine Arte

A 14th edition of the Varilux French Film Festival will be held between November 9th and 29th, across the country. In Florianópolis, the festival will be shown at Paradigm Cine Arte, with 19 new films, two classics and a miniseries about Brigitte Bardot. This is the largest event for works in this language outside of France, with more than 1 million spectators since its creation.

Animation, drama, comedy, suspense and romance are part of the program, with recent films that have been included and won awards at festivals such as Cannes, Toronto and Biarritz.

BONNARD'S MUSE / Bonnard, Pierre et Marthe
Director: Martin Provost
Synopsis: The life of the French painter Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) and his wife, Marthe de Méligny (1869-1942), over five decades. The man his home country dubbed the “painter of happiness” would not be the painter everyone knows without the enigmatic Marthe who alone occupies almost a third of his work.

THE JOURNEY OF ERNESTO AND CELESTINE / Ernest et Célestine, le voyage en Charabie

Synopsis: Ernesto and Celestine are traveling back to Ernesto's country to fix his broken violin. This exotic land is home to the best musicians on the planet and music constantly fills the air with joy. However, upon arrival, the two heroes discover that all forms of music have been banned for many years.

SOULMATES / Les âmes soeurs

Synopsis: After an attack on his military convoy in Mali, French lieutenant David Faber is brought back to France to recover. Deeply burned and suffering from severe amnesia, he spends months in recovery, under the careful watch of his concerned and devoted sister Jeanne, who hopes he will regain his memory. But strangely, he doesn't seem very eager to reconcile with who he was.

ANATOMY OF A FALL / Anatomy of a kick
Director: Justine Triet
Synopsis: Winner of the 2023 Palme d'Or, Anatomy of a Fall is a gripping portrait of a woman on trial for the murder of her husband. In the film, the life of German writer Sandra (Sandra Hüller) falls apart when her husband, Samuel, is found dead. Little by little, the trial stops being just an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel's death and becomes a disturbing psychological journey into the depths of the couple's troubled relationship.

THE BEASTS / The Beasts
Directed by: Rodrigo Sorogoyen
Synopsis: A French couple moves to a village in the interior of Galicia, seeking proximity to nature. They lead a quiet life, plant vegetables and restore abandoned houses, but they do not have a good relationship with the other inhabitants. After rejecting a wind energy project, two brothers from the neighborhood have a disagreement and take the situation to the limit.

DRIVING MADELEINE / Une Belle course
Directed by: Christian Carion
Synopsis: Madeleine, 92 years old, calls a taxi to get to the nursing home where she will live from now on. She asks Charles, a somewhat disillusioned driver, to drive by the places that mattered in her life, to see them one last time. Little by little, through the streets of Paris, Madeleine reveals an extraordinary past that disturbs Charles. There are taxi trips that can change a life.

CHRONICLE OF A PASSING RELATIONSHIP / Chroniques d'une liaison passagère
Directed by: Emmanuel Mouret
Synopsis: During a party, Charlotte, a single mother, meets Simon, a married man. This new couple agrees to see each other just for fun, without experiencing anything beyond it. However, this relationship without a future becomes disturbed when new feelings appear.

GUILT AND DESIRE / L'été dernier

DIVINE DISGUISE / Magnificat

Synopsis: When an elderly priest passes away, the chancellor in charge of the diocese, Charlotte, discovers that he was a woman. Without anyone suspecting, the priest had been practicing his vocation for years. Appalled, Charlotte decides to start an investigation within the community.

Soon after, his father, François - a brilliant conductor of international renown - receives a phone call announcing that he has been chosen to conduct the orchestra at the Teatro Scala in Milan. This being his biggest dream, they are both thrilled with the news. However, Denis quickly becomes disillusioned when he discovers that, in fact, he is the one chosen to go to Milan, and not his father.

MAKING OF / Making Of

Synopsis: Simon, an experienced director, begins shooting a film about the workers' struggle to save their factory. But nothing goes as planned. His production company wants to rewrite the ending, his team goes on strike, his personal life is in ruins; and to make matters worse, the lead actor is an egocentric obnoxious. Joseph, a young man who wants to enter the film industry, agrees to direct the making of. He takes his role very seriously and begins to capture all the confusion, proving that the making of can sometimes be much better than the film itself.

MY NEW TOY / Le Nouveau jouet

Synopsis: Thinking about supporting his future family, Samy accepts a job as a night watchman in a luxury store. Philippe Etienne, the richest man in France, decides to open his toy store and tells his son, Alexandre, that he can choose whatever he wants most as a birthday present. Alexandre chooses Samy as his new toy.

Synopsis: Marguerite's future seems clear. THE BOOK OF DISCORD / Youssef Salem a du succès

Synopsis: Youssef Salem is 45 years old, descends from a family of Algerian immigrants and lives in Paris where he dedicates himself to writing. After a series of setbacks, he decides to write a partially autobiographical novel, inspired by his youth and in particular by the taboos surrounding sexuality in the environment where he grew up. The book provokes a passionate public debate, but it also generates tension within his family, which Youssef will try to keep together as best he can.

THE RENAISSANCE/Un coup de maître

Synopsis: Owner of an art gallery, Arthur Forestier represents Renzo Nervi, a painter in the midst of an existential crisis. ORLANDO, MY POLITICAL BIOGRAPHY / Orlando, ma biographie politique

Synopsis: The film is an adaptation of one of the most renowned works by English writer Virginia Woolf, “Orlando”, in which the director, Paul B. Preciado, writes a letter to the writer saying that his character Orlando has become real: the world is becoming orlandish. Preciado called for a casting call with 25 different people, all trans and non-binary, to play the fictional character of Virginia Woolf, while narrating their own lives. The film also brings together a series of archival images about trans people from the mid-XNUMXth century that evoke the real historical Orlandos in their fight for recognition and visibility.

DESPISE/Le Mépris
Director: Jean-Luc Godard
Synopsis: Writer and screenwriter Paul Javal leads a happy life with his wife Camille. The famous American producer Jeremy Prokosch invites him to work on an adaptation of the epic poem Odyssey, directed by Fritz Lang at Cinecittà, in Rome. The couple then goes to the location and meets the film crew. Prokosch soon advances towards Camille in front of Paul, and then layered conflicts occur between art and business. This attempt at seduction will sound the death knell for Paul and Camille's relationship.

Synopsis: Over six 52-minute episodes, the biographical series chronicles the rise of Brigitte Bardot in post-war France, between 1949 and 1959. From the age of 15 to 25, from her rigorous upbringing to her desire of freedom and love, her dream of becoming a dancer, her marriage to her first love Roger Vadim, her legendary performance in "And God… Created Woman" to her casting with Henri Georges Clouzot for the film "The truth"; we discover how the young girl became "BB" forever. But also how, along the way, she sparked both hate and adoration.
