O Integrated Culture Center (CIC) hosts one of the biggest science-fiction film festivals in the country in July, with a list of more than 75 new films on screens in the capital. There will be five thematic exhibitions, with international competition, Latin American awards and guest feature films. The premiere highlights of this edition go to the feature films "The Fourth Sunrise" ("Al Patrulea Răsărat", 2022) from Romania, and "Caixa Preta" ("Black Box", 2023) from the United Kingdom. The event will be held between the 24th and 30th of July.
From Brazil we will have two national premieres: "Espaço Limiar" (2023), by Gabriel Papaléo (RJ) and the award-winning "Mata Seco em Chamas" (2022), by Adirley Queirós and Joana Pimenta (DF). In the competitive international short film show, films from 28 countries will compete for several awards. Restored classic works, which are not well known to the public, will set the tone for the diversity of techniques in inventive cinema. From the Czech Republic comes "A Very Crazy Comet" ("Na Kometa", 1970) by the great Karel Zeman, master of cut-out animation and pixilation. The film is based on the work of Jules Verne. From Poland the classic "Silver Globe" (1988). by Andrzej Żuławski, a film that took almost 10 years to complete due to the censorship regime at the time. And from Brazil, the great science-fiction classic "Abrigo Nuclear" (1981) by Roberto Pires, a filmmaker from Bahia of fundamental importance in national cinematography. Pires produced Glauber Rocha's first feature, and was the inventor of the first Brazilian cinemascope lens, the Igluscope.
Filmmaker Roberto Pires will be honored at the festival, which will feature surprises in the program, debates with local directors, international premieres and everything related to science fiction, the genre of fantastic cinema that grows the most among audiovisual productions in the world. As part of the tributes, the documentary "Bahia Sci-Fi" by Petrus Pires will be shown, about the mythical science-fiction film "Abrigo Nuclear", which has in its cast none other than Norma Benguell, one of the greatest Brazilian actresses.
Every festival has free admission, with screenings at Sala de Cinema Gilberto Gerlach, at CIC, with indicative classification of each block informed on the website and at the concierge.
The realization of Sci-Fi Floripa is a screen occupation movement proposed by Cinematic HUB, curated by Petter Baiestorf and Gurcius Gewdner from Santa Catarina, coordinated by Andrey Lehnemann and artistic direction by Pedro MC. The co-production of the 2nd Sci-Fi is by Tempestá Cultural, with the support of Marte Inovação Cultural, and realization of Cinemática HUB, with the support of Cineclube Cinema Unisul and Museu da Imagem e do Som de Santa Catarina, Fundação Catarinense de Cultura.
Special thanks to Vitrine Filmes, Festival Screen and Filmfreeway platform.
