Cineclube Matutá – free screening of the 1954 film Godzilla

During the month of May, the Santa Catarina Public Library (BPSC) hosts sessions by Cineclube Matutá. The exhibitions have free entry and will be held on the 9th and 23rd, at 19pm.

The project was awarded the 2023 Catarinense Cinema Award - Paulo Gustavo Special Edition.

The Cineclube's proposal is to promote sessions of fantastic titles from the seventh art, with the theme "You will become a snack", focused on monster and creature films. The titles shown will be Godzilla (1954) and A Serpente Verde (2021), respectively, on the 9th and 23rd. Before the features, short films produced by filmmakers from Santa Catarina will also be shown. Furthermore, each session will be followed by a debate in which the main themes present in the works will be discussed.

“Godzilla” is one of the greatest classics of Japanese and world cinema. The enormous creature, which today headlines two of the biggest franchises in the history of the seventh art, appeared for the first time in 1954, in a film whose narrative and technical prestige remains prominent to this day. The title was chosen for the session that inaugurates the cycle. “The Green Serpent”, a title shown on 23/05, is a Chinese animation inspired by the “Legend of the White Serpent” from Chinese folklore. The film was released in theaters in 2021.

Held on a rotating basis in different parts of the city center, Matutá arrives at the Public Library of Santa Catarina in May, in the month that the cultural space celebrates 170 years. The film club's proposal, to offer sessions in well-known spaces in Florianópolis, arises from the intention of rescuing the spirit of old street cinemas, building a cultural community with the public.
