Drinks such as “chimarrão”, “tererê” and “mate”, made from the same plant - Ilex Paraguariensis - and consumed in much of Brazil, have their origin directly related to the culture and spirituality of the Guarani people. This is a fact, however, that few know. With “Luta da Erva”, a production by Plural Filmes and directed by Marcia Paraiso, in 70 minutes we present the knowledge of ancestral preparation, of harvesting in the bush for tea, an indigenous tradition absorbed by the so-called “caboclas” populations of southern Brazil .
The premiere in Florianópolis will be on October 11th, at 19pm, at the Gilberto Gerlach Cinema Room (Centro Integrado de Cultura), with support from the Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS). The documentary was made with resources from the Catarinense Cinema Award, from the Catarinense Culture Foundation. Entry is free (passwords collected 1 hour beforehand) and, right after the session, there will be a debate about the film with the presence of the director, part of the cast and the Plural Filmes team.
Filmed in autumn, winter and summer, in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul, the documentary is inspired by the research and book by professor Arlene Renk – “A Luta da Erva – an ethnic craft of the Brazilian nation in the west of Santa Catarina ”. The research, carried out between 1987 and 1989, brought together many interviewees, including yerba mate extractors, foremen, yerba mate owners and professionals in the areas of health, education and social assistance, resulting in a first edition of the book, in 1997, and the 2nd edition, 2006.
