Brazilian science fiction finds a meeting point at the Sci-Fi Floripa festival, which reaches its fourth edition from July 22 to 27. Screenings at the Gilberto Gerlach Cinema, part of the Integrated Culture Center (CIC), will take place from July 23 to 27.
This year's program features more than 60 films from 20 countries, including shorts and features. The 2025 edition will feature a competitive showcase of international short films, focusing on subversive aesthetics; commentary sessions with filmmakers and researchers; and spaces dedicated to the convergence of audiovisual, technology, ancestry, and political insurgency, such as the "Poetic Entropy" Exhibition, which features experimental fiction, animation in various styles, and artistic jerry-rigging. Other highlights from the program include the short film "Bela LX-404," by Luiza Botelho (RJ), starring Brazilian art giant Lea Garcia in her final film appearance, and the feature film "Salomé," by André Antônio (PE).
The production is by Cinematica Hub, curated by Petter Baiestorf, Gurcius Gewdner, and Yasmine Evaristo. The artistic direction is by Florianópolis-based filmmaker Pedro MC, and production is by Cris Villar, Calvin Trezzi, Ana Horn, and Karine Schwarz. The festival is supported by the Museum of Image and Sound of Santa Catarina (MIS/SC).
