The Santa Catarina Historical Museum, located at Palácio Cruz e Sousa, will host the exhibition "A Look at Japanese Culture" from October 11th, at 19pm. The exhibition commemorating the 220th anniversary of the Japanese visit to Florianópolis will remain open until March 2, 2024, with free entry from Tuesday to Friday, from 10am to 18pm; also on Saturdays and holidays, from 10am to 14pm.

The exhibition was designed to mark a historical fact. On October 16, 1803, four Japanese sailors, for the first time in history, set foot on the Island of “Sankaterini” (Santa Catarina), precisely in Forte de Santana, in what was then Desterro. They were the first Japanese to touch Brazilian soil, or Buracili as they said. Therefore, the date is important for the diplomatic history of both countries.

With this exhibition, the public can see a little about Japan – its clothes, its uses and customs, the historical warrior and the art of Origami. It's a glimpse, a quick punctual flash into pinpointed details of Japanese culture, an introspective, delicate, simple culture.

Around 14 kimonos wearing Nature will be on display: spring, summer, autumn and winter. And how the Japanese seek to make the elements of Nature their master: at the end and beginning of the year, the ages celebrated in childhood and on the occasion of marriage. There will also be pieces that show what the ideal samurai was – the one who walked the Path of the brush and the sword, known as Bunbu ryodo, and also an allusion to origami, its delicacy that was originally an offering to the gods.

The exhibition was curated by Cristiane Pedrini Ugolini, from the MHSC Educational Action Center, with support from Hisae Kaneoya (Nipocultura).
