The exhibitionSky and Earth of the Andes" brings together works from the core of Andean art of Paulo CollectionThe exhibition comprises paintings, objects, artifacts, audiovisual records, and studio materials from the 17th and 18th centuries. The curators are Andrés De Leo and Diana Castillo, both from the Center for Research and Conservation of Heritage at the University of Engineering and Technology (UTEC) in Peru.

The curatorial selection highlights works of art from the viceroyalty period. In 1543, Spain established the Viceroyalty of Peru to administer Peru and control South American lands such as Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, part of Bolivia and, at certain times, Venezuela.

“Archangel Michael” (ca. 1750), oil on canvas, 140 x 98 cm - Eduardo Marques/Photo Disclosure

In five sections, the pictorial paths are explored in greater depth, highlighting devotional images with compositions of candles, flowers, and curtains; the tradition of arquebusier angels, warriors of heaven represented in courtly attire; the spiritual battle between good and evil in scenes of indoctrination; and finally, the Marian cycle, from the Annunciation to the coronation of the "Queen of Heaven." The connection between the past and the contemporary is found in "The Suppression of the Saint by Ornament" (2025), oil and acrylic on marine plywood (203,5 × 147 cm), by André Griffo, the only Brazilian representation in the exhibition, which helps to reflect on issues of domination, control, and the power of religion.
