A large long-term exhibition will take over the Santa Catarina Historical Museum starting on November 12th, opening at 19pm. The exhibition "Federalism - The revolution that shook Santa Catarina"It remains open to visitors free of charge for one year, always from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 am to 17:30 pm; and on Saturdays, from 10 am to 13:30 pm. The exhibition uses maps, documents, photos, models, oil paintings, period weapons, and other materials to tell the story of an event that took place 130 years ago, transforming Santa Catarina and making the then peaceful city of Desterro the capital of the provisional Republic of the United States of Brazil. The Cruz e Sousa Palace, where the museum is located, was part of this historic moment, when it was still the Government Palace, serving as the headquarters of the provisional government for seven months (from October 1893 to April 1894).

About the Federalist Revolution

The war was motivated by the end of the Empire, with the deposition of Dom Pedro II and his replacement by the military, which caused a wave of shocks that occurred in the south of the country. On one side, political groups wanted the creation of a Republic composed of federated states; on the other, there were the military who took over the government and defended a Republic with a strong central power. The military and political movement left a toll of hundreds of deaths in the three southern states of the country.
