The photographic exhibition “Pesca Essa: Heritage and Cultural Identity of the Costa da Lagoa School” will arrive on November 12th at Museum of Image and Sound of Santa Catarina (MIS/SC), at the Integrated Culture Center (CIC). The exhibition is a partnership between the Journalism and Community Action (JAC) extension project, from the Journalism course at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), and the Municipal Elementary School of Costa da Lagoa. Visitation is free and will remain open until November 20, from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10 am to 21 pm.
According to the teachers responsible for JAC, Melina Ayres and Isabel Colucci, the intention of the proposal is to make known throughout the city a place built by the community and that represents a cultural force: EBM Costa da Lagoa. The exhibition presents records of the construction of the school and the transformations of the space in the present day, as well as the cultural elements of the region that still preserve Azorean traits.
EBM Costa da Lagoa was founded in 1968 in a traditional community in Florianópolis, located in the northern part of Lagoa da Conceição. The area, which is only accessible by boat or trail, is home to approximately 1.200 people. “Several generations of residents have attended the school, which was built by the community itself on land donated by a family from Costa,” explain the UFSC professors.
The work of selecting and assembling the photos was carried out together with the children of the school, who participated in the entire process. In addition to the photographs and the traditional Boi de Mamão dolls, the documentary “Vem Cá Meu Boi! A Costa da Lagoa e seu Boi de Mamão” (Come Here, My Boi! The Costa da Lagoa and its Boi de Mamão) will be shown during the exhibition, produced by the students of EBM Costa da Lagoa with the support of JAC.
The public reception ceremony will be held on November 13th at 13pm. On this day, children from the school will be present and will participate in a roundtable discussion to discuss the production of the documentary.
The exhibition is supported by UFSC, the Municipal Government of Florianópolis and the Union of Professors of Federal Universities of Santa Catarina (APUFSC).
