The Victor Meirelles Museum (Ibram/MinC) launches the book “Mariano Moreno and his exiles”, by the History professor at the Federal University of Fronteira Sul (UFFS), Fábio Francisco Feltrin de Souza, published by Humana, at 18:30 pm on August 21, 2024, Wednesday. The event is open to the public, has free entry and takes place in the month that marks the 192nd anniversary of the birth of Victor Meirelles (18/08/1832 – 22/02/1903). There will be an autograph session and a talk by the author, mediated by the coordinator of Humana publishing house, Fernando Boppré. The work in question is a biography of Mariano Moreno, who was Meirelles' teacher in his childhood and introduced him to the world of arts, contributing crucially to the events that would lead the young man to receive a scholarship at the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts ( AIBA), in Rio de Janeiro.
“Mariano Moreno and his exiles” had the support of the Santa Catarina State Research Support Foundation – FAPESC and brings an in-depth study of the life of the Argentinean living in Nossa Senhora do Desterro (currently Florianópolis) who was a teacher, artist, designer , engineer, surveyor. According to the book's synopsis, due to his political positions and friendship circles, Moreno had to flee the dictatorship of Juan Manuel de Rosas. After being arrested on the outskirts of Buenos Aires in 1838, he went into exile in Montevideo and Desterro, where he worked on public works and was a drawing teacher. Despite carrying out his professional activities, he experienced numerous financial difficulties, in addition to being in poor health. With the fall of Rosas in 1852, he returned to Argentina with his entire family.
