Film + show: 'Usher' by Diogo de Haro

On the 10th and 11th of May, the show “Usher, Por Diogo de Haro” will debut at the Cinema Gilberto Gerlach, from the Centro Integrado de Cultura (CIC). This is a screening of the film “The Fall of the House of Usher”, a classic of French experimental cinema, from 1928, by Jean Epstein, with music composed and performed live by the pianist, composer and synthesist Diogo de Haro. The event is supported by the Museum of Image and Sound of Santa Catarina (MIS/SC).

With his palette of sounds nuanced in analog synthesizers and effects processors, de Haro revives in our contemporary times the times when the phantasmagoria of the newly born seventh art was condensed by the presence of the figure of the film musician. The new music, composed especially for the film, drives the images in their tragic liberation from objectivity, emerging under the influence of the characters' affections.

In the immense solitude of the Usher house, props come to life through the subjective gaze of the camera and the impulse of the music, becoming incidental characters with their own foreboding voices. In the film, Lord Roderick Usher lives in a house lost in the middle of the lakes, avoided by the people of the nearby village. With his wife suffering from an unknown illness, Roderick sends a request for help to his old friend who promptly undertakes the long journey to help him.

Upon arriving at his destination, the visitor is faced with a landscape of anguish and mystery that surrounds a dark relationship between Roderick, his beloved wife and the work of art to which he obsessively dedicates himself. Based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe, the film features a script by the master of surrealism in cinema Luis Buñuel.
