A maid who decides to change her position within the household, a master who believes he is in control, and a series of strategies to reverse this relationship. Written in 1733, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi's "La Serva Padrona" has reached the present day preserving a characteristic that helped make it a landmark in the history of opera: the ability to transform everyday relationships into comedy and provoke the audience through the conflicts between its characters. And it is this work that the Camerata Florianópolis will bring to the stage of the Teatro Ademir Rosa (CIC) on September 25th at 20 pm. Tickets are already on sale on the Blueticket website.
The production will be conducted by maestro Jeferson Della Rocca, with stage direction by Claudia Ondrusek, production direction by Maria Elita Pereira, and featuring soloists Carla Domingues and Douglas Hahn.
A small opera that took on a life of its own, “La Serva Padrona” was composed by Pergolesi as a short comic intermezzo, intended to be performed between the acts of the opera seria “Il Prigionier Superbo”. What initially functioned only as an interval ended up captivating the public and taking on a life of its own, becoming one of the works that contributed to the development of Italian opera buffa.
Years later, her performance in Paris was at the center of the so-called Querelle des Bouffons, a debate that mobilized musicians and intellectuals around the direction of French and Italian opera.
Pergolesi's own life was also marked by its brevity. Born in Italy in 1710, the composer was only 23 years old when he wrote "La Serva Padrona". Three years later, he died of tuberculosis. Despite a short career, he left behind works that have spanned centuries, including the celebrated 'Stabat Mater' and the short comedy that became a landmark of European musical theatre.
An 18th-century story that still provokes thought.
With a libretto by Gennaro Antonio Federico, the plot follows Serpina, an intelligent and determined maid who refuses to remain in a submissive position, and Uberto, her master, who believes he is in charge of his own household. The relationship between the two takes a turn when Uberto decides to get married to put order in his own life and free himself from the maid's influence.
Serpina seizes the opportunity to put into practice a plan that also involves Vespone, her accomplice. Through theatrics, jealousy, and games of appearances, she leads Uberto exactly where she wants him: the transformation of the servant into a mistress.
Behind the humor, the opera stages issues related to power relations between men and women, class differences, control in affective relationships, and the inversion of social roles. These are conflicts presented in the 18th century, but which remain recognizable to contemporary audiences.
