"Freud's Last Session," directed by Elias Andreato and based on the text by award-winning American author Mark St. Germain, has already had more than 350 performances, been seen by over 150 people, and will be presented again on November 22nd and 23rd, 2025, at the Ademir Rosa Theater - CIC, in Florianópolis.
The plot presents a fictional encounter between Sigmund Freud (Odilon Wagner - the father of psychoanalysis) and the writer, poet, and literary critic C.S. Lewis (Marcello Airoldi), two intellectuals who influenced the scientific and philosophical thought of 20th-century society. During this dialogue, Sigmund Freud, a relentless critic of religious belief, and C.S. Lewis, a renowned Oxford professor, literary critic, former atheist, and influential defender of faith based on reason, passionately debate the dilemma between atheism and belief in God.
Mark St. Germain's text is based on the book "God in Question," written by Dr. Armand M. Nicholi Jr., a clinical professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Freud wants to understand why a former atheist, a brilliant intellectual like C.S. Lewis, could, in his words, "abandon the truth for an insidious lie"—becoming a devout Christian.
In Freud's office in England, they discuss the existence of God, but the verbal clash expands to topics such as the meaning of life, human nature, sex, death, and human relationships, resulting in a spectacle that deeply connects with the viewer through tools such as humor, wit, and the importance of listening as a starting point for a good conversation. Sarcasm and irony permeate the entire discussion. The forceful ideas presented confuse us, regardless of whether we are atheists or believers.
The set design by Fábio Namatame (nominated for the Shell Award for best set design) recreates the consulting room where Freud developed his psychoanalysis and studies. He was in exile in England after fleeing Nazi persecution in Austria during World War II, in 1939.
