“A Baleia” and other films showing at Paradigma Cine Arte

The drama about obesity and fatphobia, “A Baleia”, by American director Darren Aronofsky, opens this week at Paradigma Cine Arte. The feature has more than 100 awards at festivals and competes for three Oscar 2023 categories. The program is available between February 23 and March 1, at 14 pm and 19 pm. 

Oscar nominations are in the main category of Best Actor for Brendan Fraser, who plays Charlie, and arrives as a favorite for the statuette for his performance; Best Supporting Actress for Hong Chau, playing Liz, Charlie's friend and nurse. The film also competes in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category. 

The drama tells the story of an English teacher, Charlie, who lives in his apartment due to severe obesity and binge eating disorder. His relationship with his daughter Ellie is fragile, and in the plot he tries to reconnect with the teenager to repair past mistakes, while living alone and with an unhealthy routine, under the care of his friend and nurse Liz. 

Actor Brendan Fraser, interpreter of “The Whale”, won the “Best Actor” category at the Critics Choice Awards 2023. The award is known for being an “Oscar thermometer” and the victory increases the actor’s chances of winning the most prestigious award important part of world cinema.
