Oitaliano Umberto Eco, one of the greatest scholars in contemporary culture about the advent of the internet, says that it has had several benign effects. But also the evil ones, what he calls the "mud machine" and the "myriad of sites designed to propagate untruths and spread rumours". And he compares them to the sensationalist outlets of the past. Like the brown press. And he highlights the role of the press in ascertaining the facts and checking information for readers' analyses. But most importantly: "Young people read the newspaper to see if what they see on the internet is true or false," says Eco, in an interview published by Spain's El País. A reflection that comes at a good time for print journalism in a clear demonstration of its importance even in the face of the advancement of the digital world.
