A spark of the island's gastronomy

Last week, the Clube dos Gourmets brotherhood released an album-book with recipes from its chefs and a little of the history of this selfless group of friends who gather around a good table, a good dish, some good glasses and a lot of chat. The cocktail party was at the Hotel Maria do Mar and businessmen, parliamentarians, liberal professionals and a pleiad of confreres from the city attended to honor the club presided over by physician Luiz Fernando De Vincenzi, the well-edited work by journalist Clóvis Medeiros and the 100th anniversary of the honoree of the night, Victor Fontana. As the journalist Moacir Pereira wrote in the back of the book “Santa Catarina took a leap in gastronomy even before the national reality, a feat that is due to the creation of the Clube dos Gourmets de Florianópolis in an unprecedented initiative by Paulo Konder Bornhausen”. And as President Di Vincenzi says “we are a brotherhood celebrating coexistence around a good meal”. Thus, many renowned chefs emerged from this niche and the emergence of star-studded restaurants.

At the height of his 100 years, the businessman, former deputy governor and former federal deputy Victor Fontana maintains a phenomenal memory. On the night he was honored he spoke to everyone calling them by name and gave an interview to journalist Moacir Pereira remembering historical facts and leaving an example to current parliamentarians.

A week before being honored by the Clube dos Gourmets, Victor Fontana called his confrere Chiquinho Assis, host of the tri-partite night celebrating the 100th anniversary of the book and its function. Dr. Victor, who lost a son last year at age 60, called to comfort his friend who had lost his mother. An Italian with a generous soul.

Chiquinho and his wife, chef Maria Alice, hosted the book launch night of Clube dos Gourmets. Good wines, good whiskey, draft beer from Saint Beer and beers from Kairós that have been successful in the taste of beer lovers with delicacies from the kitchen of the Maria do Mar hotel.

 

Little school

When PKB, founder of Clube dos Gourmets, was on the island in the 60s, there were four or five restaurants that “could use that name”, he says in the book's introduction. On his return from a period in France, with his son Ricardo, the creation of the brotherhood took shape, which became known as a school of chefs and gourmands, such as Narbal Corrêa, who he cites as one of the best seafood specialists in Brazil.

 

In the dark

The Hercílio Luz bridge already has its lights off so that the restoration work can proceed with the safety of the workers. It will stay that way until the end of 2018. For those who consider the bridge to be of vital importance as a symbol of the Capital Island, it will be a brutal change to the night image of the place, giving tremendous distress if it also disappears in daylight.

One was in a luxury hotel in Copacabana, another in a flat in Leblon and another in a mansion in Barra da Tijuca.
