Tanabata Matsuri Festival: Japanese cultural event reaches its ninth edition

On July 19th and 20th, from 10am to 17pm, the Florianopolis Botanical Garden, hosts the 9th edition of Tanabata Matsuri — the Japanese Festival of Santa Catarina.

Promoted by the Japanese-Santa Catarina Association, the event is free and offers the public an immersion into Japanese culture through workshops, musical performances and various oriental cuisine options.

The festival is inspired by an ancient Japanese legend about the annual meeting between lovers Orihime and Hikoboshi, who were separated by the stars. As part of the tradition, visitors will be able to write wishes on strips of colored paper and hang them on bamboo branches.

The 9th edition of Tanabata Matsuri is sponsored by the Kunito Miyasaka Foundation and supported by the Consulate General of Japan in Curitiba, the Blue Tree Hotel in Florianópolis and the Municipal Government of Florianópolis.

  Start: 19/07/2025 10:00
