Atlantic Garden coast

The coastline of Jardim Atlântico is formed by part of Praia do Balneário that starts at the mouth of the Buchelle River, which separates Florianópolis from the neighboring municipality, São José, and ends at the wall that advances over the sea belonging to the Escola de Aprendizes-Marinheiros. As it is a military area, access is not allowed. This part of the coast of the continental region is practically all constituted by a single strip of sand, of dark yellow color and calm sea, characteristic of the bay. The water, depending on the direction and intensity of the wind, has a dark color and a strong smell, because of the sediments released by the various streams, water mouths and clandestine sewage points.

History
This part of the coast belonged to the Municipality of São José until 1944, but its beaches were already among the favorites of the inhabitants of the continental region from the 1920s to the mid-1960s. With the creation of the Jardim Atlântico subdivision in the 1950s , the coast gained value in terms of real estate, attracting investments and new residents. However, the growth and lack of planning also brought harmful effects such as pollution and the removal of the population from the sea.
