The Florianópolis flag was created to symbolize the city. Its use was regulated by law nº 1409, of March 17, 1976, the year in which Florianópolis completed 250 years of political and administrative emancipation. It is formed by a white rectangle 8 x 11 modules, cut by two red bands. White and red are the colors of the State of Santa Catarina. The bands are located at the top and bottom edges of the rectangle. In the center of the flag are the municipal coat of arms, created by law nº 1408, of March 15, 1976, based on the city's coat of arms. In the new symbol, the figures of Dias Velho and the officer of the Barriga Verde Regiment that flank the shield were excluded.
