The population of Florianópolis, according to the estimate of the 2010 Census (IBGE), is composed of 421.240 inhabitants, with a population density of 929 inhabitants per km². This makes the capital the second largest city in terms of population in the state, second only to Joinville. Anyone born in Florianopolis is officially called a Florianopolitan. The term "manezinho", so used these days, was formerly used in a pejorative way for the rural man from the interior of the island, which makes some of the older people not like to be called "manezinhos".
Higher education: lever of migrationIn addition to those who come to live in Floripa to work, surf or enjoy life, many people come to study. Thus, the city ends up being predominantly inhabited by young people. THE Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) is primarily responsible for this migration. Created in 1956, today it receives more than 25 thousand students from all over the country and is considered the third best university in Brazil. This strong training and research development center in Florianópolis is also reinforced by the Santa Catarina State University (Udesc), the Military Police Teaching Center (CEPM), the University of Vale do Itajaí (Univali), the University of Southern Santa Catarina (Unisul) and several other institutions of Higher Education in Florianopolis.
