Nossa Senhora de Lourdes Grotto was built in 1913 by the Sisters of Divina Providência with the help of the Daughters of Mary of Florianópolis and former students of Colégio Coração de Jesus. The current Avenida Madre Benvenuta was, at the time, a modest connection between Itacorubi and Trindade.
Veneration of Our Lady of Lourdes began after 18 alleged apparitions to a young woman from the south of France named Bernardette. Because of this, there is an imposing image of Our Lady of Lourdes in the cave and, in front of her, Saint Bernardette, kneeling and praying.
At the request of residents, who wanted to avoid its demolition for the construction of a street, the site was listed at municipal level in 1987.
