Ponta do Coral

Ponta do Coral

The area known as Ponta do Coral is located in the portion of Avenida Beira Mar Norte that belongs to the Agronómica neighborhood, opposite the seat of the State Government. An object of interest for both the public and private sectors, the disputes around Ponta do Coral reveal conflicting interests and different perceptions about what it means to live in a city in its fullness.

During the 1940th century, the land served as a strategic lookout point in the defense system of the Island of Santa Catarina. Already in the first decades of the XNUMXth century, it served as a place to store oil and also as a leisure space for residents of the region. In XNUMX, Ponta do Coral became the property of the Abrigo de Menores de Florianópolis.

In the year 1980, the building of the Shelter for Minors caught fire. Police investigations found that the fire was arson, but those responsible were never identified. In the same year, the institution was transferred to the municipality of Palhoça and the State Government sold the land to Nova Próspera Mineração, which intended to build a hotel in the area.

Since then, social and environmental movements have questioned public authorities about the future of Ponta do Coral. Tempers flared when Hantei Engenharia drew up a project for the construction of a luxury complex that included a marina. For the feasibility of the work, the project provided for a landfill of approximately 36.000 m², which was discarded by the city hall in 2013.

Although Ponta do Coral belongs to the private sector, residents and tourists move freely through the area. The presence of fishermen, sports enthusiasts and lovers of beautiful landscapes is not uncommon. Even the view of the sunset from Ponta do Coral is one of the most beautiful in the entire city.
