Who would hire a black man who was in prison for 18 years? Eugene Brown (Cuba Gooding Jr.) faces this problem. After some time looking for a job, he gets a job as a janitor at a public school. There he finds a hostile and disorganized environment, with troubled students who even expelled a teacher from the school. In charge of taking care of them, Eugene discovers that most young people seek easy money through trafficking. Wanting to change this situation, he decides to create a chess club for students to think about the consequences before acting. Initially the students do not accept the idea. After much insistence from Eugene, they begin to learn chess and are excited by the idea of competing in the sport. However, a local mobster doesn't like the initiative, as the club's success is decreasing trafficking in the community. In pursuit of money, he may jeopardize the chess club.
