It's another cold winter night. An old bachelor named Seligman (Stellan Skarsgard) walks normally along the street. Suddenly, he finds a semi-conscious and badly injured woman next to an alley. Seligman takes her home and heals her injuries. After regaining consciousness, the woman, named Joe (Charlotte Gainsbourg), begins to tell her life story, from birth to age 50. Divided into eight periods, the reports are marked by a lot of lust, encounters and incidents.
