Taking place in 1891, the film presents the part of Gauguin's story in which he goes into exile in Tahiti – wanting to rediscover his free, wild painting, far from the moral, political and aesthetic codes of civilized Europe. He infiltrates the jungle, facing loneliness, poverty, disease. There, Gauguin meets Tehura, who will become his wife and the subject of his most important paintings.
