Taking place in France, in 1809, the film tells the story of Captain Neuville, a great seducer who asks for the hand of young Pauline, under the suspicious gaze of Elizabeth, the latter's sister. But Neuville is called to the front and Pauline remains unknown. As she gradually declines, Elizabeth picks up the pen and begins a correspondence with Pauline, making Neuville a true war hero. But the captain finally reappears, much to the young woman's dismay...
