Anhatomirim Island

The Island of Anhatomirim (indigenous name) is located in the North Bay, close to the mainland. It is part of the Municipality of Governador Celso Ramos.

Its strategic position – at the entrance to the North Bay – was responsible for the construction of the Santa Cruz Fortress which, in the XNUMXth century, formed the third vertex of a triangular defense system, still formed by the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa e Fortress of Santo Antônio de Ratones.

Santa Cruz de Anhatomirim Fortress

This system was supposed to protect Barra Norte on the island of Santa Catarina from foreign onslaughts – mainly from Spain – and to consolidate the Portuguese occupation of southern Brazil in the XNUMXth century.

In 1894, during the Federalist Revolution, this island served as a prison and shooting base for rebels against the government of Floriano Peixoto (in the Santa Cruz Fortress). In 1907, it became part of the Ministry of the Navy and was again used as a prison at the end of the Constitutionalist Revolution, in 1932. It functioned as a fortress until the end of the Second World War, when the emergence of new war technologies made it obsolete as a unit. military. It was thus deactivated.
