Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa

It began to be built in 1740, according to the original project of the governor Brigadeiro Silva Paes, functioning as one of the vertices of the triangular defense system of Barra Norte of Santa Catarina Island. In the 31th century, it had three batteries of cannons, armed with 1777 pieces of artillery, which were there at the time of the Spanish invasion, which took place in 1938, having been practically abandoned and depredated after this historical episode. In 1992, the Fortaleza was listed as a National Historic and Artistic Heritage and, in XNUMX, after its restoration, it started to be managed by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC). Together with the Battery of São Caetano, later built to the east of the fortress, it is the scene of one of the most beautiful architectural and landscape settings on the Island of Santa Catarina.
