On August 18, 2022, the 190th anniversary of the birth of Victor Meirelles de Lima (1832 - 1903), the Victor Meirelles Museum (Ibram/Secult/MTur) opens the exhibition “From art to the nation: constructions”, also alluding to the 200th anniversary of Brazil's Independence. Texts and works that present the artist will be on display, suggesting reflections on the artistic process of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and on the role of historical painting, more specifically, of battle paintings, in the formation of the national imagination. Visitation is free and takes place from Tuesday to Friday, from 10 am to 18 pm, and on Saturdays, from 10 am to 15 pm, except holidays.

The exhibition consists of three modules. The first brings biographical aspects of the artist, considered one of the great names of Brazilian painting and, according to Antônio Parreiras, one of the names that inaugurated “genuine national art”. At the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, Victor Meirelles stood out as a student and as a master of historical painting. The second module presents the process of construction of academic art, through the study of technique, both in drawing and painting. In it, the public will be able to see for the first time the Still Life by Victor Meirelles that was donated to the museum by Professor Marietinha Monteiro in June 2022 and restored by Luiz Fernando Abreu, from the Conservation and Restoration Laboratory of the National Historical Museum.

The third module brings studies and sketches of the scenes of two wars portrayed by Victor Meirelles and which have great importance in the construction of discourses about the Brazilian nation: the Battle of Guararapes, an episode of the expulsion of the Dutch from Brazil, by the action of a “Brazilian” army. ”, which the official historiography presents as formed by Portuguese, indigenous and black people and the War of the Triple Alliance (or War of Paraguay), the last systemic conflict faced by the Brazilian Empire, landmark of the formation of the army and beginning of the serious economic, social and economic crisis. policy that led to the fall of the Empire and the proclamation of the Republic.

In this module, two portraits stand out, painted by Meirelles on request: the portrait of Admiral João Mendes Salgado, the Baron of Corumbá, and that of Thereza Maria de Azevedo Salgado, the Baroness of Corumbá. These two works will be at the Museum for the next five years, on loan, on loan by Augusto Carneiro, the couple's heir. The purpose of receiving the museological goods is to expose them to society in order to fulfill the institutional mission of “preserving, researching and disseminating the life and work of Victor Meirelles”.
