Check out the schedule of the first batch of festival premieres:

With four feature films included, the director Zhang Yimou is one of the main attractions of the cycle. One of the most famous Chinese filmmakers, internationally renowned since the 1980s, with more than 130 awards, he stands out for the technical accuracy and chromaticism of his films. In "The Story of Qiu Ju” (1992), the director works with actress Gong Li, certainly the most international Chinese actress (just remember that she was the protagonist of the Hollywood film “Miami Vice”). The work was the big winner at the Venice Film Festival, where Li was also considered the best actress. The story focuses on peasant life and a young woman about to give birth. And we feel in history how persistent and proud the Chinese people are.

Already with "none less" (1999), Zhang Yimou would again win the top prize at the Venice Film Festival. Set in a small poor village, the plot focuses on a teacher who is forced to return to his home to take care of his own mother who is about to die. The village mayor then hires a temporary replacement, who is only thirteen years old.

In "Hero" (2002), Zhang Yimou featured the performance of the idol Jet Li, a successful actor in Hollywood productions. The feature film shows its protagonist, named No Name, telling how he defeated each of his enemies – and himself belied by the local king's version. The way the director uses signs and colors was highly praised by specialized critics and the work was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film.

Another achievement of Zhang Yimou Oscar nominee for best foreign film included in the selection is “The Clan of Flying Daggers” (2005). In total, the work won 26 international awards and stunned the public and specialized critics for its stunning visuals, with emphasis on the fight sequences, with choreographies involving spears, arrows, swords, daggers, bamboo, fabrics and all kinds of props. At times, it's as if the characters are performing a true ballet, moving with sync and grace.
