O World Cinema Project performs the display of Mary and Max – A Different Friendship, Australian film based on a true story Originally titled just Mary and Max, the film, released in 2009, is directed by Adam Elliot. Movie Synopsis: Mary is 8 years old, has a birthmark on her forehead and lives in suburban Melbourne, Australia. Her mother is an alcoholic and her father is a worker, both of whom are very absent in her life. Her only friend is her pet rooster. Max lives in New York, is 44 years old, has an imaginary friend and suffers from Asperger's Syndrome. He is also a loner, and despite being born a Jew he became an atheist. The little girl sends a letter to a random address handpicked from the phone book, telling a little about her life. Max, the recipient, responds and an innocent relationship is born through letters. Stop-motion sensitively addresses strong themes and emphasizes the meaning of friendship. Despite the age difference, they are very attached to each other and this feeling survives all the ups and downs of life. The session takes place in the Elke Hering Auditorium of the University Library and features comments from journalist Cíntia Teixeira dos Santos and philosopher Erik Dorff Schmitz.
