The work of the journalist Marli Cristina Scomazzon in partnership with Jeff Franco, is edited by Editora Insular, has 160 pages and is based on dozens of manuscripts by North American travelers who visited the city in the 19th century.
The narrative deals with a period still unknown in the history of Santa Catarina. The detailed descriptions of the landscape and island life form a beautiful portrait of Desterro from two centuries ago. Marli says that the research lasted five years and was carried out using manuscripts and letters produced between 1848 and 1856 as raw material, when the island was invaded by North Americans. At this stopping point on the journey towards California, on the west coast of the United States, where they went in search of gold, they made reports hitherto unknown to the history of the state.
