The Sexta Jazz AF in May welcomes French bass clarinetist Denis Colin for a very special tribute to Charles Mingus. One of the most important figures in 1922th century American music, Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bassist, pianist, bandleader and composer. Born on a military base in Nogales, Arizona, in 40, and raised in Watts, California, his early musical influences came from church — choir and group singing — and from listening to Duke Ellington on the radio when he was eight years old. He studied bass and composition in a formal way while absorbing the music of the great jazz masters firsthand. His early professional experience in the XNUMXs found him touring with bands such as Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton.
