Shrek is an ogre who lives happily and alone in a swamp in the middle of the forest. His peace is threatened when the ruler of a nearby city, Lord Farquaad, dumps in its swamp, in its place all the magical creatures that were expelled from his realm: Duloc. To get rid of these creatures, the ogre makes a deal with Farquaad: his mission is to rescue the "piece" that would make the Lord's kingdom complete. That play is Fiona, a politically incorrect princess who lives imprisoned in a castle guarded by a dragon. Shrek and his friend Donkey then set out on a mission to free her. And they do! Shrek, however, falls in love with Fiona, starting to fight for the conquest of her heart.
