During World War II, more than 60 northeasterners were compulsorily enlisted, led to exchange the arid geography of the sertão for the flooded lands of the Amazon. The mission: to extract latex from the rubber tree for the production of elastic gum for the allied countries.
For some recruits, however, this would be a journey of no return: with the end of the conflict, they were left to fend for themselves in a strange land and those who survived were only assured of their rights much later.
