Henry Chinaski, alter ego of his own creator, Charles Bukowski, is a gutter writer struggling to get published. Chinaski had a difficult childhood during the Great Depression, growing up in the shadow of an authoritarian father. His body is full of scars caused by an abnormal case of acne, a disease that would change his way of seeing the world. He lives from town to town working part-time jobs, getting involved with several women and getting drunk daily.
