Romeo and Juliet: The meeting of Shakespeare and Popular Culture – 11th Festival Palco Giratório

! - This event/schedule has already happened - !

From the 1st to the 30th of September, Florianópolis receives the 11th edition of the Festival Palco Giratório Sesc - largest performing arts event in the state. Theater, dance, circus, music and urban interventions are part of the programme, which also includes workshops and debates. For this year, there will be a total of 41 shows from 14 Brazilian states.

The show, from Garajal Group (Maracanaú/CE), presents a reinterpretation of the classic Romeo and Juliet. In it, the most staged youth love story is transposed to a terreiro de reisado - a typical festival of the Northeastern regionalism -, adding characters such as Mateus, Catirina and Jaraguá to the plot, as well as princes and warriors who mediate the clash between Montecchio and Capulet, two rival families that conspire for a tragic outcome. In the play, body expression is supported by sword fights, dances and games with the ribbon stick and coconut wheel.
