Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa

To be used as one of the vertices of the defensive triangle planned by Brigadier José da Silva Paes, the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa began to be built in 1740 and was completed four years later. In 1765, the São Caetano Battery was attached to the fortress, with the function of increasing protection on the east side, on the beaches of Jurerê e Canasvieiras. The São Caetano Battery was designed by Sergeant Major Francisco José da Rocha during the government of Francisco de Souza e Menezes.

Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa

After the Spanish invasion of 1777, the Fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa was practically abandoned and only when it was declared a National Historical and Artistic Heritage, in 1938, which began to receive small restoration works. Through the Fortalezas Project, in 1989, the Federal University of Santa Catarina became and remains responsible for its maintenance and administration. In 1987, the area was registered as an archaeological site and, three years later, Ufsc ended the excavation processes at the site.
