Fort of Santa Bárbara da Vila

O Fort of Santa Bárbara da Vila began to be built in the second half of the XVIII century, having been completed in 1774, as indicated by some plans and maps of the time.

This fort, whose original design some historians attribute to the Engineer José Custódio de Sá e Faria, was located on a small rock formation in the South Bay and was originally connected to the old Praia do Canto, or Praia da Vila, by an arched stone bridge.

Its primary function was to provide the Village of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, present-day Florianópolis, against enemy vessels that might access the Island through the South Bay.

During the XNUMXth century, the old Fort served as lazaretto e military infirmary. In 1875, it housed the Port authority and in 1893 it hosted the State government. The various renovations it has undergone over the years and the landfills that have taken it away from the sea have left it completely uncharacteristic.

It was fallen like National Historic and Artistic Heritage in 1984. Occupied until 1999 by an agency of the Captaincy of the Ports of Santa Catarina and today it houses the Cultural Center of the Navy in Santa Catarina (CCMSC).
