Peri Lagoon

Peri Lagoon is the largest lagoon entirely of fresh water on the coast of Santa Catarina, with five square kilometers of water surface. It is also the largest source of drinking water on the island. In summer, the lagoon is often frequented by bathers looking for a quieter corner. There are not many options for eating, there is only a restaurant-bar and a snack bar. A good tip is have a picnic. In the surroundings of Lagoa, on the border between Pântano do Sul and Ribeirão da Ilha, there is the peaceful and peculiar Sertão do Peri. The inhabitants of this region don't like much publicity, but the place is very beautiful and, still, rural. The energy took a while to arrive, which kept the characteristics of an old community.

Among the activities that can still be seen there are stills for the production of sugarcane brandy, agriculture and artisanal practices for the production of manioc flour (which until recently were still on farms powered by animal traction or water wheel). . As an inheritance there is still pottery, an old path paved by slaves, and typical rural dwellings of simple architecture, influenced by Portuguese colonization.

Natural Features of Lagoa do Peri

It is the largest freshwater lagoon on the coast of Santa Catarina. It is 5,2km² in length; 11m deep. The Lagoa do Peri Municipal Park has 2.030 hectares. of conservation unit and 20,3 km² of hydrographic basin. Its waters are not affected by tidal fluctuations, as it is about 3m above sea level.

The Lagoa do Peri Municipal Park is one of the main ecosystems in the original Atlantic Forest stage of preservation and regeneration. It is a nursery for typical animals, such as the Otter and the Capuchin Monkey. And even endangered birds are found, as is the case with the Blue Jackdaw.

History of Lagoa do Peri

It all started in the 1981th century from the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Lapa do Ribeirão, a nucleus of Azorean colonization. In mid-1828, Lagoa do Peri was listed as a Natural Heritage Site by Municipal Decree nº 1976, in 23. With 1981km², the area was transformed in XNUMX into Lagoa do Peri Park, being, since then, under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Foundation of Environment (Floram).

The area around the lagoon has forest and beautiful trails that lead to waterfalls and old colonial mills. The ecological walks, in some cases, are carried out with accompaniment. Children also have good entertainment options. In addition to the fresh and calm water, ideal for bathing, there is a small playground, with an area lined with huge eucalyptus trees, where they can play and have fun at will. Boating, kayaking and other non-motorized species, as well as hand-line and reed fishing are also allowed there.

Sights of Lagoa do Peri

Trails: For those who like to discover paths through the forest, there are three trails that surround the lagoon. At the Sachet Path, which skirts the north and northwest margins, it is possible to appreciate up close preserved areas of Atlantic Forest and even remnants of colonial mills. already the Restinga path it goes from the lagoon to Armação beach through sandbanks, pine trees and eucalyptus trees. Otter Project: Visits to Projeto Lontra must be scheduled in advance. Projeto Lontra is a scientific breeding ground for otters and, therefore, the visits have an educational character.
