Metropolitan Cathedral of Florianópolis

One of the main draws of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Florianópolis is the collection of sacred art. Since May 30, 1902, its interior has housed the sculpture "Escape to Egypt", by the Tyrolean artist Demetz Groeden, which presents the life-size escape of the Sagrada Familia in two cedar blocks. The artwork is hand-carved in one piece.

Also part of the collection are the German pipe organ, from 1924, the main carillon with five bells, from 1922, and the stained glass windows made in São Paulo in 1949.

Recently, the Metropolitan Cathedral underwent an important renovation that involved large public investment at the state and municipal levels. The repairs involved interventions in the structural part of the building, in the facade and in the lighting and sound system, aiming to further enhance its architectural beauty.

Brief history

The history of the Metropolitan Cathedral begins in year 1675, when the bandeirante Francisco Dias Velho, founder of the village of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, begins to build a chapel in honor of the patron saint. As usual at the time, he chose the highest and most visible spot in the small village.

In the middle of the XNUMXth century, the chapel became too small for the number of faithful who attended the masses. it took Jose da Silva Paes, first governor of the old Captaincy, to design a new Church for the same location. Started in 1748, the work was completed 25 years later, under the government of Don Jose de Melo Manoel.

Since then, the Matrix has undergone several expansions and modifications that made the architectural ensemble lose its original shape, resulting in the widening of the walls laterally and the placement of a neo-classical porch, replacing the old main entrance door.
