XV de Novembro Square

On the hill next to the sea, the pioneer Francisco Dias Velho founded, in 1673, the town in honor of Nossa Senhora do Desterro. And it is in this place that Praça XV de Novembro is currently located, with its petit pavé paving that forms an admirable mosaic with motifs from island folklore created by the plastic artist Hassis.

It was from there that the city began to expand, with its small alleys bordering the beach. Until today, the original road network is preserved in the Historic Center, with João Pinto, Tiradentes, Víctor Meirelles, Fernando Machado, Anita Garibaldi, Saldanha Marinho, Nunes Machado, Antônio Luz and Travessa Ratcliff streets to the east and Francisco Tolentino, Conselheiro Mafra, Felipe Schmidt, Trajano, Deodoro, Jerônimo Coelho, Sete de Setembro, Álvaro de Carvalho, Pedro Ivo and Padre Roma to the west.

This area concentrates a large number of historic buildings, which have the original architectural features preserved by law.

In Praça XV is the Monument in Honor of the Heroes Dead in the Paraguayan War and the busts that honor famous Santa Catarina residents: Cruz e Sousa, poet, Victor Meirelles, painter, José Boiteux, historian, and Jerônimo Coelho, founder of the press in the state.

Tree-lined during the 1871th century, the square received large trees, such as imperial palms, Indian ficus and carnations from India, but surely the arboreal star is the Centennial Fig Tree. It is said that she was born in 1891 in a garden that existed in front of the Mother Church and that was transplanted to its current place in XNUMX.
