Alligator - Carijós Ecological Station

the conservation unit Carijós Ecological Station it protects areas of mangrove vegetation, swamps, riparian forest, open sandbanks and arboreal sandbanks, as well as the fauna that inhabit them.

In more than 7 km² of extension, the Espaço Silvestre Institute (formerly the Carijós Institute) has environmental education, social mobilization and scientific research programs in this area. The objective of this group is to keep the mangroves alive.

Only monitored visitation for environmental education purposes is allowed in the park. However, at one end of the park, at the western end of the Daniela's Beach, a place known as Pontal da Daniela, it is possible to appreciate all the beauty of the flora and the intense activity of the fauna of this rich ecosystem.

The park area currently has only 37% of the original area of ​​the Ratones River Mangrove and 68% of the original area of ​​the Big Saco Mangrove.

In its area, 107 species of birds have already been identified, among them the cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) and the spoonbill (Ajaja ajaja). Among mammals, there are otters (Lontra longicaudis), a species included in the Official List of Endangered Species of Brazilian Fauna, by IBAMA.

The presence of 42 species of fish was also revealed. In addition to the natural abundance, there are three sambaqui-type archaeological sites, important for discovering local history and culture. The sambaquis show signs of human presence on the island for at least 4500 years.
