The exposure "In the Face of Impermanence” by Ruchita premieres in Florianópolis on December 13, 2023, at 19 pm, at the Museum of Image and Sound of Santa Catarina (MIS/SC), focusing on Japanese culture and philosophy. Artist Ruchita presents a group of works from an ongoing project that includes performances for video installations, photographs and multimedia works based on spontaneous improvisations in the places where she came into contact with Japanese culture. Curated by R. Scott Macleay, the exhibition “Face to Impermanence” aims to instigate perception based on uncertainty, a contemplative look attentive to chance, which leaves aside the search for logical conclusions.

The Wabi-sabi aesthetic is made up of countless qualities that relate to characteristics such as simplicity, timelessness, emptiness, asymmetry, imperfection, impermanence, intimacy, transience, and rusticity. Even though all these aspects are reflected in the works that make up this project, transience would stand out as something that connects the whole. The philosophy of Wabi-sabi is like a feeling more than an idea, carrying out the exercise reacting to a very contrasting context of everyday life.

The actions that Ruchita performed consist of attempts to connect to this state of mind based on natural simplicity and the realization that nothing remains, nothing is finished and nothing is perfect. Ideal perfection is unrealistic, unnatural. Our society experiences a compulsion for the new, promptly discarding what is no longer new. The artist seeks, through artistic practice, to approach situations that allow the senses to expand, slowing down the frenetic automatism of contemporary materialism. To this end, in addition to placing oneself in an attitude of resonance in environments permeated by an ancestral culture that survives the shock of technological development, in order to further highlight the associations with Wabi-sabi.

The exhibition, in addition to bringing reflection and contemplation, disseminates Japanese culture and philosophy to the public, which is also present in the south of the country. Visitation will be free and will continue until January 31, 2024, always from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 21pm.

Production is carried out by MAF Economia Criativa. On December 14th, at 18pm, there will be a conversation “The Zen body in times of anxiety”, with writer Fabiana Higa, at the exhibition site. On January 13, 2024, the dance performance Inspirations about Butoh is also scheduled to be presented.
