O Santana do Estreito Fort It was built in 1761, according to a project by the Military Engineer José Custódio de Sá e Faria. Being located next to the strait joining the North and South Bays, its function was to protect the Village of Nossa Senhora do Desterro, present-day Florianópolis, from vessels entering the North Bay. Subsequently, this protection was reinforced with the crossing of fires with the Fort of São João, located on the mainland.
A remarkable episode in its history took place in 1893, on the occasion of the Federalist Revolution, when he exchanged fire with the rebel squad. Over time, it underwent various uses and renovations, until its definitive restoration in 1969, which returned it to its original forms.
