sign trail

Right at the beginning of the Trail to the Sign you can see a lithic workshop composed of six grinding basins which are circular cavities made in the granite rock, used by the primitives to mold hooks, arrowheads, axes and spearheads made in stone. From there, a light walk through the Atlantic Forest will take you to the point known as "watershed". At this point, you can see the difference between the Atlantic Forest ecosystem and the Costão ecosystem just ahead.

Then, walk north, along the slope, to a steep staircase, which leads to the cliff just below. There is the archaeological site that has the largest number of rock inscriptions on the island, including the famous "Máscara Têmea", a type of inscription on the stone that was considered unique in the world and that earned the island the listing as an Archaeological Heritage Site. About six months after the tipping, a similar inscription was found at an African archaeological site. Photography and filming are allowed. In case of excessive rain, the trails will be cancelled.
