Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict

A Church of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict was the first building linked to the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary and Saint Benedict of the Black Men, formed by free slaves in Florianópolis who could not attend the white men's church. Initially, a small and rustic chapel was built in the mid-eighteenth century, later replaced by the current church that had its construction started in 1787.

Despite the permanent inclusion of elements in its body, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and São Benedito maintains its predominantly baroque and neoclassical architectural features. The front staircase, for example, was only added to the complex in 1906. The electrical installations date back to 1912 and the replacement of the original wooden floor with the existing hydraulic tile took place in 1927.

Despite being simple, the Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito stands out in the Historic Center of Florianópolis. An interesting fact is that it was from the top of its stairs that the famous island artist Victor Meirelles painted, in the XNUMXth century, the canvas “View from Desterro” where he portrayed in a panoramic view the city of that time, with the South Bay as a background.
