Long before Europeans arrived on Santa Catarina Island, this region was already inhabited by primitive peoples. Nearby archaeological sites prove the presence of sambaquis and, later, Carijós Indians.

Between 1748 and 1756, with the Azorean migration to the coast of Santa Catarina, the region began to be occupied, giving rise to extensive plantations of manioc and other products. Even though it is a permanent preservation area (APP) and listed as a natural heritage of Florianópolis, by municipal decree number 135/88, its surroundings have been the target of uncontrolled urbanization.

Although the volume of water in the lagoon has been decreasing, many residents and tourists use it to swim, practice stand-up or simply sunbathe and have a picnic on the shore.
