2km from Praia da Daniela, Ilha de Ratones Grande is home to the Fortress of Santo Antônio de Ratones, which was an apex of the defensive triangle designed by Brigadier José da Silva Paes to defend the island of Santa Catarina from foreign invasions.
The fortress was built from 1740 and still has several buildings erected, among them the Paiol da Pólvora, the Porta da Fortaleza and the Casa da Guarda. Access to the island can be done by various means, such as kayaks, speedboats and tour companies.
